About the album

Eric Alexander: tenor sax | Jim Rotondi & Alex Sipiagin: trumpet, flugelhorn | Andrei Kondakov: piano | Dmitri Kolesnik: bass | Lenny White: drums

FIVE CORNERS is a result of a project that started six years ago when New York bassist Dmitri Kolesnik invited tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, pianist Andrei Kondakov and drummer Lenny White to record his music. The musicians clicked instantly, and were so comfortable playing Kolesnik's compositions that all the tracks used on the CD were first takes, alive with freshness and feeling. The recording, Blues for Dad, was released on a leading Russian label, Boheme Music, in 2001 and received good responses in Russia and the US.
Since the release of that album, the group has been performing regularly in New York. In 2005 they took part in the biggest Jazz festival in Russia: the Peter-and-Paul International Jazz Festival in Saint Petersburg (formerly Leningrad).
The outstanding personnel on FIVE CORNERS, the group's second album, is the same as on Blues for Dad but with one addition: the trumpeter Jim Rotondi, who is Eric Alexander's steady partner in different lineups. Along with Sipiagin, they are among most sought-after players in New York. At the heart of the group, Lenny White brings his unique energy and style to the music. Kolesnik's friend and collaborator Andrei Kondakov is a famous Russian musician who often appears on the New York jazz scene.

Dmitri Kolesnik, born in Leningrad (now St.Petersburg), left his first job in engineering to study music at the Mussorgsky College of Music and graduated in 1985. Two years before he had already been voted Discovery of the Year by the Soviet Jazz Federation, and consecutively played at international festivals with giants as Dave Brubeck, Billy Taylor, Jon Faddis and Pat Metheny. After two years in Germany, he moved to New York in 1991 to study with Ron Carter. He put together an invaluable teaching guide on Carter, featuring transcriptions of 19 bass solos, which was published by the Hal Leonard Corporation. More recently, Kolesnik has become a busy bassist on the scene, appearing at such clubs as Birdland, Iridium, and Knitting Factory.
As talented composer he combines singable melodies with the energy of Afro-American rhythms and describes his compositions as “dushevnaya musika” (=Russian soul music - Russians refer to things that are deeply moving as “dushevny” = soulful).
As a bass player, Kolesnik believes in providing the best support for musicians in the group so the band sounds good, rather than displaying virtuoso ability on the instrument as a goal. In that, he follows the tradition of his favorite bassist Ron Carter.
